14:30 Ensign Kimball: Welcome to the Ensign Training Class

14:30 Ensign Kimball: Today we will discuss Daylight Savings, Holiday Schedule, and Color Grouping in Charts

Daylight Savings

14:31 Ensign Kimball: First, lets talk about the up-coming Daylight Savings change. This year Daylight Savings time is going to be on new and different days than in the past. The date is being move 2 weeks sooner in the Spring, and 2 weeks later in the fall. The change will be on March 11th.

16:34 Ensign Kimball: This will cause some problems with pre-programmed Computers, clocks, telephones, PDA's, and VCR's, etc. As far as Ensign Windows is concerned....there might be a problem if your Computer is not showing the correct Time.

16:35 Ensign Kimball: Those who have the Windows VISTA operating system should not have a problem. Microsoft has already addressed this issue.

16:36 Ensign Kimball: Those who have Windows XP Service Pack 2 can install updates to handle the new Daylight Savings dates.

16:36 Ensign Kimball: If your computer already has 'Automatic Updates' turned on, then you will be fine. You can always manually go to the Windows Updates site and check for updates to your system.

Holiday Schedule

16:40 Ensign Kimball: Next......Ensign's 'Setup | Holiday Schedule' screen.

16:43 Ensign Kimball: This past week...(in the US) there was a Holiday on 2/19/2007. This date exists in the Holiday Screen, and causes specific charts to Delete that Day from the Chart. Some Ensign users had charts that they did NOT want to have the bar removed. This can be achieved by Unchecking the Markets or Exchanges that correspond to the chart.

16:45 Ensign Kimball: For example, if a user wanted to keep the bar on the Chart for FOREX charts, then the 'Forex' box should be Unchecked (when 2/19/2007 is highlighted). So...you could first click on 2/19/2007 in the list. Then uncheck Forex.

16:52 Ensign Kimball: The Holiday Schedule screen does not affect how intraday charts update. It only relates to Daily charts.

16:53 Ensign Kimball: Ensign Software maintains and updates the most common Holidays. The list will be auto-updated when you upgrade the software. You do not need to maintain the Holiday dates.

16:54 Ensign Kimball: However, you can add Holidays to the list by selecting a date in the Top-Left corner of the 'Holiday Schedule' screen, then click the ADD button. Place checkmarks next to any exchanges that should have a holiday (or are closed) on that date. Ensign Windows will then prevent Daily charts from having a bar on that date.

16:55 Ensign Kimball: For the most part, you shouldn't try to Delete Holidays from the list. Ensign upgrades will just re-insert the Holidays back into your list. However, you can check or uncheck the Markets that the date will exclude.

16:56 Ensign Kimball: Any Questions regarding this screen ?

Color Grouping of Charts

16:57 Ensign Kimball: The last topic that we will discuss today is COLOR GROUPING on charts.

16:57 Ensign Kimball: Ensign Windows allows you to display several charts at the same time. Charts can be grouped together by either Symbol or Time Frame.

16:57 Ensign Kimball: When a Chart is opened, two color boxes are displayed in the bottom-right corner of the chart The left box is a 'Symbol Group' color box. The right box is a 'Time Group' color box.

16:57 Ensign Kimball: A chart can be grouped with other charts on the screen based on the color of the two boxes. This allows several charts to respond to Symbol changes and Time Frame changes with just one click (based on the color of the boxes).

16:59 Ensign Kimball: The chart that was just posted has a RED Symbol group box, and a GREEN Time group box. To change the color of either box, just click the mouse on the box, and then select a color.

16:59 Ensign Kimball: Example....lets say that you have 4 charts opened.

17:00 Ensign Kimball: Each chart is using the same Symbol of IBM....but they all have different Time Frames (like 5-minute, 60-minute, Daily, and Weekly )

17:01 Ensign Kimball: If you change the Symbol Group box on each of the 4 charts so that they match (all are RED). Then....you can change the SYMBOL on each chart at the same time. They will be tied together.

17:02 Ensign Kimball: Example....you could press CTRL-S to change the Symbol on any of the 4 charts. The other 3 charts that are grouped together with that chart will all change to the newly entered Symbol. They will all maintain their unique Time Frames. But they will all switch to the new symbol together.

17:03 Ensign Kimball: You can use any of the colors to group different charts together. However, 2 colors are Special. BLACK and WHITE.

17:03 Ensign Kimball: A BLACK color box is not grouped with any other chart. It stands-alone.

17:04 Ensign Kimball: A WHITE color box is a wild card color. It is tied (or grouped) with ALL open charts. Any change to the Symbol of any open chart, will cause a WHITE box chart to also change.

17:05 Ensign Kimball: Now lets assume that you have 3 different charts that are open.

17:05 Ensign Kimball: IBM.30 MSFT.30 and DELL.30 They are different symbols, but they share the same Time Frame (30-minute charts) If you were to change the TIME FRAME group box on each of the 3 charts to be BLUE, then they will be grouped together. If you were then to change the Time Frame on the IBM.30 chart, and changed it to a Daily chart.....then the MSFT and DELL charts would also change to be Daily charts.

17:07 Ensign Kimball: So...in summary...you can group charts together by SYMBOL..... or by TIME FRAME.

17:07 Ensign Kimball: Use WHITE as a wild card color....otherwise, use a specific color for each of the charts that you want to Group together.

17:08 Ensign Kimball: Any questions about this Feature ?

17:08 ae: Does the grouping also apply to minimized charts?

17:09 Ensign Kimball: Yes...minimized charts will change if they share the same Color Grouping.

17:09 virt5: What about grouping on unopened workspaces?

17:10 Ensign Kimball: Any chart that is not currently open will not change. Only opened charts will change.

17:23 Ensign Kimball: Any other questions.

17:24 MakesOwnWeather: If we would like to download the Ensign Software Videos, How do we do that? Is there a simple link? Right clicking SAVE does not work. (For viewing offline.)

17:26 Ensign Kimball: You can't download the Videos and save them to your computer. However, you can WATCH the videos.

17:26 MakesOwnWeather: OK.

17:26 MakesOwnWeather: Could you give me an example of using the specific GV 240-255 in two different DYOs (i. e. non conflicting using the same GVs which, I guess would be really LVs). While you are answering, I will post my other questions.

17:34 terry: mow, 240-255 are local to the chart. (not local to the dyo). 2 dyos on same chart will use same gv240-255.

17:42 MakesOwnWeather: Terry, my question is: If a chart uses GV240 and GV241, I understand that all the DYOs in that template can access and "see" the values in GV 240-241. But if another chart uses GV240-241, it will not see the values of the first chart and will be able to put it's own values into GV240-241 without interfering with the values that the first charts has put into GV240-241?

17:43 terry: mow, I understand that to be true

17:43 MakesOwnWeather: Thank you, Terry.

17:37 Ensign Kimball: Any other questions?

ESPL Array

17:38 terry: I am trying to use additional persistent arrays for an espl study. ( 5 weren't enough). So, I thought I would use a dummy dyo to allocate storage that could be written to by espl. Writing to the dummy dyo arrays from espl seems to work during normal bar to bar operations. (good). During a chart initialization espl seems to write to the dummy dyo array. But later the array does not contain the contents sent to it. (no joy). Do I need to make a special choice when specifying the dyo lines that keeps them from clearing during initialization? I've tried a few combinations to no avail.

17:40 Ensign Kimball: Are you storing values into Global Variables ?

17:40 terry: no, into line A of a preceding dyo -- avoiding gvs. Using setstudy( hdl, 210, val, bar )

17:43 Ensign Kimball: There is nothing special about Line A or B or C.....for any given DYO. These values are not stored anywhere. They are there only while the DYO is making a pass through its calculation. A DYO should not be used to mimic an ESPL array. There is no Array associated with a DYO.

17:44 terry: So I might use the arrays of another espl study? Some of the functions within dyo's act as if each line is stored as an array.

17:45 Ensign Kimball: Depends on what you are trying to do. For example,....

17:46 Ensign Kimball: If you are trying to plot several lines on a chart using ESPL calculations, then you could use ESPL 51 and ESPL 52 to accomplish the task. If you need 8 arrays, all talking to each other, and using each others values, to calculate something, then it would likely not work as you want.

17:47 terry: Mainly need storage for calculations. it is convenient to plot the numbers to help debug

17:48 Ensign Kimball: Back to a previous question....Values assigned into array elements 0 through 239 are global to Ensign Windows. They are shared. Values assigned into array elements 240 through 255 are owned and remembered by the specific chart that the ESPL program is run on. This allows you to run the same ESPL program on multiple charts and not have a conflict with values in the 240 to 255 element ranges.

17:50 MakesOwnWeather: Ensign Kimball, so the GV 240-255 in one chart can not been seen and can be other values for a second chart?

17:51 Ensign Kimball: That is correct. They are only available to the current Chart. 0 through 239 are global and can be used by any chart. (shared)

17:52 MakesOwnWeather: Yet, and ESPL routine operating in a different chart does have access to the GV 240-255 in a different chart? Chart A and Chart B --- better terminology.

17:53 Ensign Kimball: An ESPL program running on a Chart can access 0 through 255 for that chart.

17:54 MakesOwnWeather: ESPL-ROUTINE1 operating in Chart A does / or / does not see the values from ESPL-ROUTINE1 running on Chart B? For 240-255 values only?

17:55 Ensign Kimball: There are completely different and separate Objects and do not interfere or see each other.

17:55 MakesOwnWeather: OK. Thanks. Now, I understand.

17:56 Ensign Kimball: Well.....I have to run. If you have additional questions....you can send me an e-mail at Kimballh@ensignsoftware.com

17:56 Ensign Kimball: Thank you for attending. Good luck in your trading.

17:56 MakesOwnWeather: Thank you Ensign Kimball.

17:56 Ensign Kimball: bye
