Symbol properties window - slope on Keltner - R and V charts - DSO

The class today is very informative. I tried to separate the thoughts but there is still some jumping around. When we got to the class, Howard was working on the following problem which may help many of you.

16:19 LW43: I have started using the IB feed and for er2 u4 every time I refresh I get day and night bars - I have day session only checked ..??

16:19 @Ensign_Paulo: click the day session only again after refreshing the chart - uncheck hit ok then recheck

16:19 LW43: ok will try - did nothing when I unchecked and checked

16:19 @Ensign: LW43, tell us the market hours for the ER2 U4 chart.

16:19 @Ensign: to see these press CTRL-P - do you show 2 sets of hours on the left side?? what are they please?

16:19 Ensign will have a training class in the Support chat room and use Ventrilo port 3800 - Class will start in 10 minutes at 15:30 Central time.

16:19 LW43: it shows 9:30 and 01:00 for first set and that is wrong

16:19 @Ensign: so there is only one set?

16:20 LW43: no shows 16:30 as 2nd open and no close

16:20 @Ensign: press CTRL-J keys so I get a picture of what you see please

16:21 LW43: ctrl J when what is active focus ?

16:21 @Ensign: when the chart property form is showing so I can see your property form too

16:23 LW43: I did a ctrl J while the chart prop dialogue was up

16:24 @Ensign: ok, let me show you my settings for ER2 in the Symbol Property table and you can make your match mine.

16:24 LW43: ok

16:24 @ Ensign:

16:25 @Ensign: now on the chart personal property form, (CTRL-P to see it), there is a Day Session Only box and when checked it will change the chart to show just 1st session and purge the 2nd session hours from the view.

16:26 @Ensign: right, so with my setting and the chart property of DSO (Day Session Only) being checked will restrict the chart to 8:30-15:15 Central time.

16:27 LW43: I have done that Howard? and it doesn't change

16:28 @Ensign: what are the hours on the chart property form now?

16:28 LW43: 830sync-830start 1515end

16:29 @Ensign: ok, and is the Day Session Only box checked on this form?

16:29 LW43: yes only that is checked but 2times for night in lower boxes as well

16:30 @Ensign: correct, it should show the 2nd session hours on this form. They are the hours the chart will not show bars for.

16:30 @Ensign: now can you show me the chart with CTRL-J keys and tell me where you have bars you do not want?

16:30 LW43: 0930-0100 and 04:30 for 2nd open shows no close

16:30 @Ensign_Kimball: Welcome to the Class today

16:31 LW43: control j doesn't work for me

16:31 @Ensign_Kimball: Today we will be talking about the Symbol Properties screen. This screen can be viewed by selecting 'Setup | Symbol Properties' from the Ensign menu.

16:31 @Ensign: LW43, click menu SetUp | Images and click the Reset to Dacharts button. Return to the chart and press CTRL-J again as a test.

16:33 LW43: wait there are 2 of us under lw43 name Howard

16:33 @Ensign: 2nd chart looks ok, now lets discuss first chart

16:34 @Ensign: ok, both of you with LW43, click the Setup button on the chat form and each select a unique nickname to remove the confusion

16:35 cajun: I am the first lw43 lol

16:35 @Ensign: yes, on the lower right corner of the chat form click the SetUp button and enter a nickname to replace the LW43

16:35 cajun: I sent the first pic with gray background showing night sessions - I cant get rid of the night

16:36 craig: I'm Craig

16:36 @Ensign: I cannot reshow the EW01 as gray background

16:37 cajun:

16:37 @Ensign: thx, see it now

16:37 @Ensign: press CTRL-P please and then CTRL-J again so I see property form

16:37 cajun:

16:37 grateful: how do I get overnight data please for the ES?

16:38 @Ensign: these are not the hours I asked you to change to, NOR is the DSO box checked.

16:38 cajun: I changed them under symbol props Howard for er2 and clicked day session on the symbol props chart

16:38 rah2153: every time someone sends a file across, I get a popup and it messes up the set-up window I have up. How do I get this to stop?

Sounds like IE is not your primary viewer.....if it is just use the white arrow key to go back to what you were looking at OR uncheck show posted links above where you are typing

16:38 @Ensign: did you close and reopen the chart? if not, do so and it will read the new hours, you still need to check the DSO box on this private property form.

16:38 craig:

16:39 @Ensign: that is correct, now close and reopen chart

16:39 craig:

16:39 @Ensign: press CTRL-P and check the DSO box

16:39 @Ensign: check the box on the CHART's private property form

16:39 optimistic: I had this problem, think you have to press reset defaults

16:39 @Ensign: no, you do not

16:39 cajun: oh that worked

16:39 @Ensign: just reopen the chart, press CTRL-P and check the DSO box.

16:40 @Ensign: ok, great.

16:40 cajun: is there 2 places that need to be checked for day only?

16:40 cajun: one the symbol props and other the chart props?

16:40 @Ensign: the DSO box on the Symbol Property form is used as the default to set the property for a NEW chart.

16:40 @Ensign: Existing charts have to be set or changed on their private form which is the CTRL-P form.

16:41 @Ensign: your chart was existing, so the DSO change needed to be on the chart's property form.

16:41 cajun: ok so if I leave it at 24 hr I can just do DSO on the chart prop?

16:41 cajun: I got it ! thanks loads

16:41 @Ensign: If you open a new chart, say a 90 minute chart, it will adopt as its initial DSO setting the check box state on the Symbol Property form.

16:42 @Ensign: The Symbol Property table in the New Ensign is similar to the Market Hours table in the old Ensign.

16:43 @Ensign: On thing that might have confused some is what time zone and market hours to enter in the Symbol Property table.

16:43 @Ensign: The old Market Hours table used everything as Central zone times.

16:43 @Ensign: The new symbol Property table is more flexible, you can select the zone and use that zone's market hour times.

16:44 @Ensign: For Eastern zone for NYSE, you can now use 9:30 open and 15:00 close.

16:44 @Ensign: If you live in Chicago, and are in Central zone, you can still use Eastern zone in the Symbol Property form with times of 9:30 to 16:00

16:44 @Ensign: if you want so use Central zone times, use 8:30 and 15:00 close

16:45 @Ensign: both are identical times, use which ever is convenient for you to think in. It does not matter in which zone you live. It does not matter which zone you prefer to use, or if you use multiple zones in your symbol Property table entries.

16:46 @Ensign: The key to it all, is that for whatever zone is selected, then the hours shown for that symbol need to be market hours for that time zone.

16:46 craig:

16:46 BobA: Which is better to use for 24 hour markets -- times or 00:00 and 24:00 ?

16:46 craig: my history before today is still wrong

16:46 @Ensign: Many of my examples will be Central time zone market hours, such as Zone = Central Open = 8:30 Close = 15:00

16:47 @Ensign_Kimball: I you want to have a SINGLE session (trades 24 hours)

16:47 craig: I xed out existing 60min chart and made a new one

16:47 @Ensign_Kimball: Then enter Synch time 00:00

16:47 @Ensign_Kimball: Open Time 00:00

16:47 BobA: Very clear thanks Kimball

16:47 @Ensign_Kimball: Close Time 24:00

16:47 rah2153: what is the right times for YM (ecbot) and EUR, as I believe they are different from ES and NQ

16:49 @Ensign_Kimball:

16:49 BobA: Got it thanks ! Very clear now

16:49 @Ensign: Use TWO sessions for currencies so Ensign will permit intra-day data on Sunday evening to post to the chart.
If you are using currency then you need to be careful cause then we will not be able to put in Sunday evening data. For currencies I recommend two sessions 7:20 to 14:00 and 14:00 to 7:20 Central time. This will permit second session intraday data to go in on a Sunday.

16:51 rah2153: are you sure of 14:00 on EUR?

16:51 rah2153: I thought it was 16:00

16:52 @Ensign: probably right rah2153

16:49 @Ensign: If you use a single session, then no evening data will post on Sunday night.

16:50 BobA: what about the @CASH ?

16:49 Sharkster: should there ever be two instances of same symbol listed in symbol properties?

16:50 @Ensign: yes, sharkster, there can be 2 copies of the same symbol from different exchanges.

16:50 Sharkster: tnx

16:50 BobA: Does that set up all currency symbols at once??

16:50 fx-: Howard, can you extend a little bit in your two sessions explanation please (for EUR and Sunday) ?

16:50 @Ensign: One example is the SM is posted twice, once for Future market group for Soymeal hours.

16:51 @Ensign: and a 2nd time for LFuture (overseas futures) where the SM is for some other symbol than soymeal.

16:52 bill: Howard, if I set my HKFE to Honk Kong time, , , , will it show HK time on my chart, , , and will this make it easier for Ensign to build a play back file, , , , , since the chart will not be spread over two days?

16:53 @Ensign: The market zone selection on Symbol Properties is NOT related to the time zone you show on your chart.

16:53 bill: ok

16:54 @Ensign_Kimball:

16:54 @Ensign: You can enter market hours using Hong Kong times, that is fine or you can enter them using Eastern zone times, or any time.

16:54 bill: Will this effect how the play back is built?

16:54 @Ensign: now the time zone you show on the chart is selected on the SetUp | Computer form

16:54 @Ensign: no bill, should not affect playback build

16:55 bill: ok thx

16:54 BobA: Is there any "Universal Setup" for all symbols of the same "class" like perhaps the @CASH??

16:55 @Ensign: yes boba, any symbol not found in the symbol property table will use a default which is the market group

16:55 @Ensign: it belongs to. Each market group has a default entry using the @ prefix to the name of the group.

16:56 @Ensign: So @CASH is going to be a default for any symbol that show on the Cash quote page, but which is not listed specifically in the table.

16:56 BobA: Thanks Ensign that helps

16:56 @Ensign: The @NYSE is the default for all NYSE stocks

16:56 @Ensign: the @NASDAQ is the default for all Nasdaq stocks, etc.

16:57 BobA: Very Kewl !

16:56 ZEN: is there a way to get IB forex quotes ?

16:57 @Ensign: yes, zen, the IB symbol would be like EUR/USD

16:57 ZEN: could you show a picture please ?

16:57 @Ensign: we do not have a refresh for forex on IB at this time for a couple reasons.

16:57 ZEN: yes that's logic

16:59 @Ensign: perhaps someone following forex on IB can post an example for us, please

16:59 @Ensign: I recently erases my file folders as part of my back up and have not collected any IB forex data today.

17:00 ZEN: well I think its to new

17:00 @Ensign: I was saying about the refresh, in the New Ensign our refresh source has been expanded in its coverage through our new partnership with IQFeed.

17:00 ZEN: under symbol I ad EUR/USD ?

17:01 @Ensign: They do have some forex data, but the database we have access to is delayed (of course) and unfortunately for this database they update their refresh server just once a week on Friday, which makes it practically worthless for our purposes.

17:01 ZEN: ok.

17:02 @Ensign: other exchanges refresh update tick by tick, which is exactly what we need, but the forex is handled differently unfortunately.

17:02 PlangCha: what about refresh on HKFE Howard ?

17:02 cajun:

17:02 fx-: Howard, the IB EUR symbol, which is the Euro cash future is working very nice (refresh function included)

17:02 rah2153: I see in IB TWS that the symbol for EUR that I trade is 6EU4, but my charts in Ensign are all EUR U4. Should I be using charts as 6EU4 instead?

17:02 @Ensign: and the refresh data is from either Barclay or from Tullet, which is probably different than what would be collected real-time from IB.

17:03 cajun: http://charts.dacharts.com/2004-07-14/ER2 20U4 2060min.png not available

17:04 craig:

17:04 @Ensign: 1 moment rah2153, looking

17:06 @Ensign: on my TWS I can enter EUR Sept 2004, and select Globex and I get a current quote of 1.2366

17:06 @Ensign: If I try to enter 6E as a symbol it says my account is not authorized for it.

17:06 rah2153: well I just tried to bring up a chart for 6EU4 and I get "no data found"

17:06 @Ensign: do you have 6E on your TWS? what price is showing?

17:07 fx-: rah, you should use EUR U4 if you want euro cash future or e7 u4 if you want e-mini Euro The 6E is IB's trading class

17:07 rah2153: on TWS I enter it as EUR also, but when showing the contract details, it says the symbol is 6EU4

@Ensign: ok, that might be the answer

17:08 @Ensign: sorry it is confusing, but I get confused to when each vendor may use a different symbol for the same thing.

17:08 rah2153: fx... which is preferable... EUR U4 or e7 u4?

17:09 fx-: up to you personally I prefer EUR

17:09 @Ensign: the esignal symbol uses 6E, IB uses EUR, IQFeed uses @EU, etc

17:10 rah2153: I'll leave 'em as I got 'em thnx

17:10 @Ensign: welcome

17:10 TC: Howard please explain how the "RollDay" is used as I'm never sure what day to enter for a futures symbol

17:10 @Ensign: ok, on the Symbol Property table there is a RollDay, which is primarily used by the DTN satellite customers who are trying to maintain a continuation chart for a future, such as S# for soybean.

17:11 @Ensign: Each day their system does a daily update, and we see the S#.D in the daily folder.

17:11 rah2153: so the rollday does nothing for an IB user, is that correct?

17:12 @Ensign: # is not a trade month, but is a character we will trigger a look up to determine the contract month to use for adding a daily bar to their continuation file.

17:12 @Ensign: correct rah2153, not really used by IB users

17:12 rah2153: ok

17:12 fx-: Howard, I don't understand why when using IB data feed Ensign is not able to provide daily (after hours) charts for #F contracts

17:13 @Ensign: fx, something like ES #F is not an IB symbol

17:13 fx-: as far as the refresh is coming from other sources

17:13 @Ensign: They will not send data on ES #F. they will send data on ES U4, however.

17:13 fx-: I know but Ensign can include #F symbols after hours for having daily continuos contracts charts from other sources

17:14 @Ensign: it is a project on my list of good ideas to work on to implement so #F will update by connecting to U4 or Z4

17:14 fx-: great

17:15 @Ensign: the refresh of weekly and monthly coming from IQFeed will be continuation when you ask for ES U4 weekly or monthly

17:16 BobA: You covered it very clearly Thanks !

17:14 bill: Howard, , , , when you get a chance . . . could you please explain how to use the Slope alert say on Keltner mid band. . . . . .?

17:15 bill: I only get alerts when number is set to Zero

17:16 @Ensign: ok, bill, you want a chart with Keltner channel on it, now what do you want the alert to do?

17:17 bill: show when the mid band is sloping upward by say 25% Is that possible

17:16 @Buffy2: I think we covered the scale and quote sheet settings before

17:17 @Ensign: thanks for reminder buffy, the Symbol Property form is also a place where you can select the format to show prices on a quote page and on the chart scale.

17:17 @Ensign: The data is internally in decimal with the decimal in the right position. This is unaffected by how you want to present it visually.

17:17 @Ensign: For example, meats need to show 3 decimals so ##.### is the correct format to select. ES needs to show 2 decimals, so ###.## is the correct format to select.

17:18 @Ensign: A companion to the format is the Min Grid setting, and for ###.## you might want to use 0.01 or 0.05 to help Ensign know what is the minimum grid interval we should show on the chart scale.

17:19 @Ensign: Where ES trades in 0.25 increments, and Min Grid of 0.25 will keep the grid on those intervals.

17:20 @Ensign: bill, 25% does not mean anything to Keltner channel or to me.

17:20 car49: could someone please explain why my daily index charts will not refresh until the next day...such as SPX,INDU,NDX etc...I'm using the IB version...this info is widely available on many websites after the close I might add

17:20 @Ensign: slope is the rate of change between two points.

17:20 bill: ok, , , I assumed you could set it in degrees - like a 25 degree angle of ascent or decent

17:21 @Ensign: degrees does not have any meaning because you can vary the horizontal and the vertical scales to make a line appear to be drawn at any angle

17:21 @Ensign: you need to change your thinking to work in the values of the Keltner channel and what is the rate at which those values are changing.

17:22 @Ensign: If the midline on one bar is at 1125.50 and on the following bar it is at value 1125.66 then the slope value is 0.16 It changed at a rate of 0.16 price units per bar.

17:22 bill: ah got it thanks

17:22 @Ensign: 0.16 is a price unit, not a degree.

17:22 bill: yup

17:23 Sharkster: I have a playback question concerning IB data collected on my PC

17:23 bill: I understand now thx Howard

17:23 @Ensign: so, the key is to read the study value at a place you wanted to identify with the alert, and compare two adjacent values, subtract them

17:23 @Ensign: and that result is the SLOPE value you might use as a trigger level.

17:23 fx-: me bassano

17:21 @Buffy2: Oh I know a question how do you get demo in playback to do the scale right

17:24 @Ensign: buffy, the demo will use the scale factor for the symbol entered on the Playback form.

17:24 @Buffy2: ok that is what I thought

17:24 @Ensign: So if the playback build symbol is ES U4 then Demo looks up the Symbol Properties for ES U4 in the table.

17:24 @Buffy2: what about ES #F

17:24 @Ensign: We will look up ES #F too

17:25 @Ensign: for all symbols we identify the underlying root, which is ES regardless of the #F or U4.

17:25 @Ensign: and we see it is a Future by finding ES #F or ES U4 in the Future market group, etc.

17:24 Aarru: A suggestion. I am new to Ensign this week, and after years of using TradeStation don't find the going "intuitive" and my only training option is slog through the Help menu. (inefficient) And the Index is IMHO quite lacking. So, the suggestion is to make up a basic training CD covering all the basic well organized and send it out to new customers. Or is there a 3rd party initiative here? Thanks. I have Ventrilo on, but you don't seem to be talking.

17:26 @Ensign: Aarru, we have organized much of the initial material you need to learn into a Tutorial which you can step through on our web site.

17:26 @Buffy2: www.ensignsoftware.com/help/help.htm

17:26 @Buffy2: introduction on that site will help Aarru

17:27 Aarru: Ok, will try that right away, thanks.

17:27 @Ensign: www.ensignsoftware.com/help/help.htm

17:27 @Ensign: On this Help page, click on the SetUp | Introduction selection

17:24 BobA: Please cover the Range and Volume bars and how to setup and how to use -- Thanks...

17:28 @Ensign: www.ensignsoftware.com/tips/tradingtips49.htm

17:28 @Ensign: In the viewer I have posted the January 2004 newsletter,

17:28 @Ensign: drag the slider bar down to the Momentum Bars article.

17:29 @Ensign: The Range Bars are Momentum Bars, and it probably irks the creator that his name of Momentum Bars has not caught on and every one calls them Range Bars because that basically is what they are and range is easier to understand then the label Momentum.

17:30 @Ensign: In Ensign the extension for the file identifies Range with (R) and the range size in points (no decimal). So ES #F.R200 will be a range bar that is 2 full ES point in height (8 ticks)

17:31 @Ensign: The trading inside the current bar will continue until this bars range exceeds 200 (2.00) points. The current bar will be capped at a height of 2.00 pts, and a new bar will start with an open 1 tick higher. The new bar will grow, possibly higher and lower, until it too has a range of 2.00 points, and then a new bar will start.

17:32 @Ensign: Each bar can thus be a variable amount of time. Each bar can absorb narrow range of static market activity and the charts tend to show the trends better and less likely to show narrowing pennant point formations because the narrowing point is absorbed into a single bar.

17:34 Aarru: Just to mention that I called support twice in my confusion and neither time did the person refer me to this Help section on the web site. Martin Pring made one or more support CD's for Metastock, has anyone done this for Ensign? Thanks for explanation of range charts.

17:35 BobA: So far very clear explanation -- Thanks -- is volume the same thinking except based on volume??

17:33 MainelyBob: what is the most current article/how-to on setup of a study on a study?

17:35 @Ensign: http://www.ensignsoftware.com/help/studyon.htm

17:35 MainelyBob: thanks!

17:36 @Ensign: yes bob, volume bars are similar. A bar continues to build until its volume is exceeded.

17:36 @Ensign: Say the trigger is 1000 volume, ie ES #F.V1000 and the current bar is at 990 and the next ticks volume is 100 The current bar will absorb 10 from the next tick volume to top itself off at 1000 volume, and the remaining 90 volume starts the next bar. The close price of the bar finishing will be the new tick's price and the opening price of the next bar will be the same price. Both bars share this price because in my example both shared the volume, 10 and 90

17:38 BobA: You are always "ahead of the curve" thanks for having new and useful tools !

17:42 BobA: One last question on the Range and Volume bars -- your opinion of using the same indicators that are used on tick and minute charts -- would these have to be modified to provide similar results?

They work the same BobA

No need to adjust IMO

17:35 car49: Howard did you see my question earlier about the daily index charts not refreshing---is anyone addressing this issue?--I'm using the 7-02 IB version-though that probably is not relevant---it's very important to be able to see the daily charts updated at the end of the day and not a day later

17:38 @Ensign: car49, the IB needs to be the source for today's index bar and the refresh can be a resource for all data prior to today. Together you should have a complete daily chart. The refresh for daily will be through yesterday, until later today when their database updates with today's daily bar.

17:39 car49: the problem is that IB does not provide High and Low for the various indexes

17:41 @Ensign: car49 if you are online during the day Ensign should be discovering a High and Low from the feed.

17:43 cajun: car49 - if u want everything real correct and up to date u might want to pay for the esig basic feed

17:43 Aarru: Glad there is help out there! :-))

17:43 car49: why could not this info be provided by IQfeed on a delayed basis - like the futures daily--ES U4. I am moving to IB and am willing to accept some lesser performance due to the IB feed etc since its free

17:43 MainelyBob: simbroker: the saved .txt file does not include the winner/loser statistics in identified delimited format, so cannot print the stats. Can this info be structured in the txt file so its useable and printed

17:44 Sharkster: how do u save the simbroker file? Thought I could only print it

17:44 MainelyBob: just close simbroker auto save

17:44 car49: I did move from esignal to the IB feed ---that's how I know there are problems with this solution

17:45 cajun: well u get what u pay for car49 ;)

17:45 @Ensign: mainelybob, just print the simbroker form image for your printed record by clicking on the printer icon with the simbroker window selected.

17:45 Sharkster: how do u run a playback using ib data over several days say of the ER2?

17:45 MainelyBob: IOW, the useful info displayed on simbroker window isn't available in the saved file, only the bottom line $

17:45 cajun: pay a lot more u get more

17:45 Sharkster: er2

17:46 @Ensign: sharkster you would to build your own ER2 playback file each day, or download it from dacharts if someone is posting them

17:46 MainelyBob: Howard, the #winners, #losers, $each etc isn't printed - just P/L summaries

17:46 @Ensign: I post on my site playback files for ES NQ and YM only.

17:48 cajun: Howard - we got the bars/times correct earlier but the last hrly bar on day session yesterday doesn't agree with facts..?

17:48 car49: but seriously Howard---if they (IQ)provide the futures daily charts updated with a 10 or 15 min delay could we not get them to do that with their index symbols as well--just asking

17:48 cajun:

17:49 @Ensign: car49, doubt IQFeed is going to update their daily database any other way than once a day after the markets close. A clever workaround is to chart a minute chart that is equal to the day session total time, like 405 minute chart. That makes one bar per day too and that will refresh from the intra-day database instead of the daily database. and should give a bar for today in progress.

17:48 bill: Howard, does refreshing affect the tick pool?
