16:31 Ensign Howard: Welcome to today's training class.

16:31 Ensign Howard: Please hold your questions until the portion of the class where we are open for Q&A.

16:32 Ensign Howard: We welcome all the new users of Ensign Windows, and hope your experience has been both pleasant and productive. To that end, we continue to produce training videos and add them to the Videos page of our web site. Today's training topics will be on organizing the studies that display on the studies panel and the color bars panel. Then we will have some training on the multiplicity of things that can be done with the draw line tool using different options and effects on the tool's property form. Then I want to cover one of the Knowledgebase articles on Support and Resistance.

16:34 Ensign Howard: All this will take about 30 minutes to cover, and then the balance of the time will be for Q&A, and we will use the mode of raising your hand to be called on by pressing the CTRL+Q keys to put a question icon by your nickname, which moves you near the top of the members list, and I can then call on you for your question.

16:37 Ensign Howard: Lets begin with the study setup..... size your chat room large enough and the viewer above to show the full image that I post. You can resize the viewer by moving the cursor to the horizontal line that separates the image from the transcript..... the cursor will change to a double headed arrow..... click down and drag the horizontal separator line vertically to make the image portion larger as needed.

16:41 Ensign Howard: uncheck the Show check box that is to the right side of the chat form..... this will prevent someone posting a URL and the new URL aborting the video that is now playing in the viewer..... you should be seeing motion and audio right now.

6:51 Ensign Howard: The next training topic will be about the variations that are possible with the Draw Line button on the draw tools panel. As was illustrated with the Moving Average study, the single object can have several variations which give the program a huge increase in flexibility and the things that can be accomplished. Let me give you the training now on the draw line button...... there is more to this button that you might suspect.

17:02 @Buffy: you really got up to speed fast on the videos Howard they are great!

17:08 Ensign Howard: ok, the next topic I want to cover is the Support and Resistance formulas for the S&R draw tool.

http://www.ensignsupport.com/email/958.mhtml

17:09 Ensign Howard: the viewer should be showing one of our Knowledgebase articles, and the article includes a picture..... use the slider bar. On the right side of the viewer to scroll down to see the full article and the picture.

17:10 Ensign Howard: If you do not see the text and picture, try clicking on the link again, or paste the link in the URL window at the top and click the Go button. Sometimes the knowledgebase articles need to be refreshed to get them to show correctly.

17:13 Ensign Howard: The links in the feedback section are excellent reference materials, and the root answer is that Ensign has the classic 3R/3S formulas implemented as our 4R/4S selections..... so Ensign has both woodie's 3R/3S and eSignal's 3R/3S

17:13 Ensign Howard: This excellent Knowledgebase article is just one of hundreds of quality informational pieces that can be read.

17:14 Ensign Howard: To access the Knowledgebase, click menu Help | Q&A Knowledgebase.

17:17 Ensign Howard: The Knowledgebase shows an article number, a date when it was posted, and a Subject. The subject can be searched for keywords, and I would recommen using a single word in the keyword search

17:17 Ensign Howard: Let me demonstrate with the keyword Support

17:20 Ensign Howard: The keyword will list articles whose subject line contains the keyword, such as 'support' which I entered in the Find box.

17:19 @Buffy: Did you mean to have two in #953?

17:22 Ensign Howard: yes, some articles have multiple questions and their answers..... Sometimes the questions are all from the same user's e-mail.... and other times related e-mail are bunded into one article because they are on the same topic. Other times, the article is the composite of several e-mail exchanged with the user, and one final groomed article is created. This is like a forum thread, where there is an exchange of feedback, but you get just the good stuff in the articles.

17:24 Ensign Howard: ok, lets open up for Q&A now.... press CTRL+Q to put question icon on your nick and wait to be called on.

17:24 Ensign Howard: you are first rich4... your ?

17:24 rich4: hi Howard.... I use EW with IB. The forex daily refreshes are incomplete. Is there something that can be done to work around that.

17:25 Ensign Howard: I have found the IB forex refreshes to be quite good... so lets review issues that might be related to this.

17:25 rich4: I have noticed that IB has daily data on forex charts going back 1 year. Can that be used for a refresh?

17:26 Ensign Howard: First suggestion is to be sure you are running current version of Ensign Windows.

17:26 Ensign Howard: 2) On the chart, press CTRL+P keys for the chart property form and select the Data tab.

17:26 Ensign Howard: On this form have IB selected as the refresh source..... you might have DTN selected now.

17:26 Ensign Howard: Close the form and right mouse click for the pop-up refresh menu.

17:27 rich4: I I am using 5/2/06 version. Would that make a difference?

17:27 Ensign Howard: If you select Refresh | Maximum you will be getting refresh from DTN which goes back several years, but does not have good bar ranges since February 1st. The DTN folks are working on fixing the daily refresh database for forex.

17:28 Ensign Howard: However, you can then refresh with the 6 month choice and get excellent refresh data from IB. Let me post knowledgebase article on this very topic.

17:28 Ensign Howard: 1 moment while I find it for you.

http://www.ensignsupport.com/email/900.mhtml

17:29 Ensign Howard: The article was posted on 05-05, so your 05-02 version may be the problem... .you need to upgrade to current version to have latest IB refresh implementation.

17:30 rich4: ok, thanks...I will try that

Plotting Indicators w/Different Scales in Same Study Window on Same Scale

17:30 Ensign Howard: ok, traderrick, your turn for your ?

17:30 traderrick: Question for class. I have 2 Ergodic studies in the same window, yet one of them does not plot correctly in relation to the other one. One of them should be lower than the other one, yet it is above it. Is there any way, such as a DYO, that could make both of them plot correctly in relation to one another? Thanks.

17:31 Ensign Howard: traderrick, the Ergodic plots on independant scales, and that is the source of your 2 Ergodic studies not being correctly correlated. Yes, the DYO can be used to remedy this and plot both on the same scale....

17:31 Ensign Howard: 1 moment while I whip together an example to illustate the solution.

17:36 Ensign Howard: Ok, in this image I have 2 ergodic studies plotted in the same sub window, the blue line is the 1st ergodic and it sets the scale for the window. However, the 2nd ergodic is plotting in red on an independant scale, which the solution will illustate is happening.

17:39 Ensign Howard: I have added a DYO and set Line A to read the study value of the 1st ergodic, and plot this as a bright Green line on the sub-window scale. Note the Study Scale window selection is Sub-Window. As expected, the 1st Ergodic blue line is completely and exactly overwritten by the bright green line.

17:41 Ensign Howard: Now line A is wholely unnecessary, but it is shown for the sake of illustrating that this DYO scale selection is plotting on the scale set by the 1st Ergodic.

17:41 Ensign Howard: now, let be check the Line B box to show how the 2nd Ergodic line will plot slightly differently, it will not hide the 2nd Ergodic Red line.

17:45 Ensign Howard: In this picture, you see the olive green line is parallel to the Red line, it is just plotted on a different scale than before, and the scale it is plotting on now is the scale of the sub-window which was set by the 1st Ergodic, which created the window by being first to use it. The olive line and the blue or bright green lines are perfectly correlated now.

17:46 traderrick: Yes, I see. Neat solution Howard. Thank you.

17:46 Ensign Howard: welcome...

How Lines and Markers are Handled

17:46 Ensign Howard: Segal, your turn for your ?

17:47 Segal: I'm not clear on what objects are saved to a chart when you flip between time frames and symbols using the same chart. For instance, if I'm flipping between time frames, and adding markers to the charts, will the markers be saved to the charts? (I think so) But sometimes I seem to lose them. For instance yesterday, I tried adding an arrow to 5 10 15 and 30 minute charts. It seemed as if all but the marker on the 5 minute chart was retained. The same question arises when using a linked quote page to flip through symbols, and marking up the charts... what is retained and what not? It seems to me that as long as I don't close down my workspace, it retains my markings on all the different symbols, but if I close the workspace, only the markings on the symbol currently showing are retained. Is this correct? Is the behaviour of 1-chart-for-multiple-symbols the same as 1-chart-for-multiple-time-frames indentical in this regard? If I can understand the underlying logic, it makes it less frustrating (and I hopefully won't lose painstakingly placed markings).

17:48 Ensign Howard: As you change charts, the studies and lines added to the chart will be saved to the chart's private study and line files, then the new chart is opened and its private studies and lines are read to dress the chart. Now if you have the Lock Lines and Lock Studies buttons checked, then the chart being loaded will not load it private studies and tools. It will try to retain the studies already on the chart.

17:50 Segal: To which button do we refer "lock lines"?

17:50 Ensign Howard: The question of 1 chart for multple symbols or multiple time frames, is the same behavior.... both or either will attempt to save objects before changing.

17:50 Ensign Howard: May I suggest you NOT have lock lines or lock studies enabled. The Lock buttons have the padlocks, one with a 's' keyhole and one with the 'L keyhole.

17:51 Segal: I don't use them.

17:52 Ensign Howard: I cannot guess here in class what the issue is, but can work with you after class and you can walk me through your steps, and I will try the same, and hopefully see the same effect and then be able to advise further.

17:52 Segal: ok, sounds good.

DYO for rounding Avg to Nearest Tick

17:52 Ensign Howard: ok buffy, your turn.

17:52 @Buffy: on that dyo, we found it necessary to add lines c and d. Is there a command that will do the rounding globally instead of have to have to adjust the number per symbol?

http://www.ensignsupport.com/email/956.mhtml

17:53 Ensign Howard: is this the DYO you are discussing?

17:53 @Buffy: .yes with lines c and d added because that one was missing some that we would consider marked. I would just like to know if there is a global to auto round

17:57 Ensign Howard: one moment, while I look to see if the chart has a Min Tick parameter that can be used in the +/- rounding function that you want to apply to the Heikin-Ashi bar body values passed in GV[3] and [4].

17:58 @Buffy: yes, thank you

18:04 Ensign Howard: OK, buffy, let me discuss this form with you, line by line.

18:04 @Buffy: ok

18:04 Ensign Howard: Line A will get the chart value, however, note that for this ES chart the value returned and shown in the Message section is 0.13 where you would have expected it to be 0.25....... Just happens we have the min tick set at half its value for the benefit of another user who wanted to be able to do range charts in half ticks

18:06 Ensign Howard: so, double check the Min tick value returned for the charts you want to do this with to see if the value is Min Tick size or half min tick size. In the case of ES, NQ, AB and YM it will be half tick size

18:06 Ensign Howard: However, Line B is one way to double the value back to full size tick.

18:07 Ensign Howard: Now, Line C is what you were thinkin of in the past to see if 2 numbers were close enough to be considered equal. However, in your particular DYO for having a regular bar cover the Heikin-Ashi bar body, you are not wanting to test for equal. So Line C is NOT the way to approach this. Instead, use Lines D and E which read the HA body values from [3] and [4] and round them to the nearest multiple of our min tick value.

18:09 Ensign Howard: For example, if the HA value is 1250.08 it would be rounded to the nearest multiple of 0.25 which would make the value 1250.00 and now this value might be covered by a regular body value of 1250.

18:10 Ensign Howard: Say these two values were the Highs..... and 1250.08 would be higher than 1250

18:10 Ensign Howard: Or another approach could be to do this.

18:11 Ensign Howard: To the Bar Values that are read and written in [5] and [6] you use Line E and Line F to order them for max in [7] and min in [8]

18:12 Ensign Howard: insert 2 lines here to read Max in [7] and add Min Tick to it and resav in [7], and to the min in [8], subtract min tick and resave in [8]

18:13 Ensign Howard: now you have the regular body tolerate fractional tick differences in the HA body high and body low, up to 1 tick on each end

18:13 @Buffy: cause 1/2 tick

18:13 @Buffy: right?

Adding Quote Page and TS windows to Stack Toolbar

18:17 @Buffy: promised to ask for someone -- can quote page be added to the stack toolbar

18:18 Ensign Howard: no... the stack is only looking for charts being stacked.... not any other window.

18:18 Segal: (I asked Howard this a couple weeks ago. T & S too. He said I was the first person to make this request.)

18:18 @Buffy: ok will tell them it can't be added thanks

18:18 Ensign Howard: ok

18:18 Segal: Why can't any hidden window be added? Isn't that kind of the point?

18:19 Ensign Howard: are there any more questions... .if not, we will wrap of this week's class and thank everyone for attending.

18:22 @Buffy: fyi I would like to add that they are using this template on commodities, stock and the eminis etc so it sounds like a $Tick is the best way to go maybe?

18:23 Ensign Howard: ok

18:24 @Buffy: thank you -- good class :-)

18:24 Ensign Howard: thx
