Transferring Study GVs, Percentage of GV to GV, Using ESPL to Print Data, Size of Study Window Saved with Template

October 11 , 2006

16:30 Ensign Howard: Hi.... welcome to training class today. I have limited time so will jump right into what I want to spend my time doing, and then in 30 minutes, Kimball will come do the training on material he wants to cover.

16:31 Ensign Howard: Anyone who has a Cybertrader account, we would like you to run Ensign on your CyberTrader feed and give us feedback. Q&A Knowledgebase article #1320 has instructions for connecting to your Cybertrader feed.

16:32 Ensign Howard: Over the past couple of weeks there have been occasions for me to help a user with their template that had a DYO or two and at times I have had a different approach to what they were doing which resulted in greater efficiency and fewer chart objects or fewer lines in a DYO being used. So, lets see if there is someone here in the room who has a template that uses a DYO they do not mind being discussed in this public place which would be an example for me to help with.

16:34 Ensign Howard: I am soliciting someone's example, and I will help you with your DYO to make it more efficient as the training in the class for others to learn from? Do I have any offers from someone who would like to have my help right now?

Study Transfer

16:35 Eric: Is this something Howard: is it possible (with DYO for example) to plot the daily 5ma (from the daily chart) in a 60m chart exactly the same?

16:36 Ensign Howard: Eric, you can use a GV to hold the value of the MA on the daily chart, and on the 60 min chart use a DYO to plot the GV content. See the following web page about study transfer.

http://www.ensignsoftware.com/help/transfer.htm

16:36 Eric: I have tried with GV I only get a horizontal and not a real moving average line

16:37 Ensign Howard: the horizontal line is because there is no back history in a GV transfer but the plot will happen in real time. Let me post another very similar answer for you, 1 moment, while I find the Q&A example.

16:38 @Buffy2: Eric you can test it while running a playback chart on top of regular workspace.

http://www.ensignsupport.com/email/1298.mhtml

16:38 Eric: In your example I see the category 'global value'. I don't see that category in my version of Ensign?

16:39 Ensign Howard: Eric, starting with the New Features added in the Sept versions, the Global Value category was split into 2 categories called Expression and Function. So if you see older example with Global Value, the same selection will be found in one or the other new categories. And you can look at the selection and usually guess correctly whether this is an Expression or a Function as the initial category to look in.

16:41 Eric: Is there another possibility besides GV to get the daily ma in a 60min chart as a real moving average line?

16:41 Ensign Howard: Eric, see the 1298 link I posted above.... it is on topic

16:41 Eric: ok thanx

16:41 Ensign Howard: Since no one is offering to have me groom or help them with their DYO, are there other questions I can answer?

Percentage of One GV to Another GV

16:41 al_gorithm: I have 2 Global Variables and I want to know what the percentage of the one is of the other. What expression do I use to accomplish this and how do I format the answer as xxx.xx%

16:42 Ensign Howard: algorithm, you basically are wanting 100 * Value / (Value+Next) and that is in the Expression category or there is also one without the 100* I do not think you are after just Value / Next or Value / # The answer will auto format to the number of decimals and you can add the % as part of the label or text

16:43 al_gorithm: correct -- I need to see some of my Study & Bar Data on the right side of my chart where my view normally is rather than keep switching my view to the Study & Bar Data Panels and then back to the chart. Is it possible, using a DYO, to display data based on the "location of the cursor", like it does in the Study & Bar Data Windows, rather than just from the bar specified in the DYO?

16:43 al_gorithm: ok, I understand now

16:44 Ensign Howard: Use as the Marker Location selection the Last selection and have your result as the DYO label. Let me post link to example of information by the cursor

http://www.ensignsoftware.com/help/features.htm#Font

16:45 Ensign Howard: In this example see there are 3 pieces of information by the cursor. See the trick shown in the label of the 3 pieces of info separated by a comma, the comma is the line separator.

16:48 al_gorithm: So if I move my cursor 10 bars back, the data displayed will be the data for bar -10? That is what I'm trying to accomplish.

Study Transfer

16:45 badger: Howard - if a set up a chart (GV transfer) at market open, run it all day, and open that workspace a few days later, and scroll back to that chart, will it still show the same data, or ? in other words, does the chart save the real-time values for review several days later?

16:47 Ensign Howard: badger, chart does not save any GV transfer.... when you reopen the array will be empty and you will have flat line.

16:47 badger: so, to review it later, I need to take a screenshot at the end of the day?

16:47 Ensign Howard: yes badger

16:48 badger: is there some other way to preserve the chart for later reference?

16:48 Ensign Howard: One way is to CTRL+J it to dacharts web site

16:50 badger: Yes - but that's still like a screenshot - eventually, will the program be able to preserve the data, for later review in the workspace, as it currently does with standard studies? (... on the wish list?)

16:51 Ensign Howard: No badger, program is not going to be able to store the temporary content of the DYO arrays. You can test the GV using playback when market is closed.

16:53 badger: ok, thanks.... maybe something for the wish list....

ESPL Printing out Data

16:53 bld: Howard, I use two of your regular moving averages, then I subtract nearest (smallest time frame avg. from longer time frame avg. On the same chart I also print the bar range. I can get my O,H,L,C, and volume by printing chart and data set. Is there any way to print the study data? I am now printing chart and price data and I go to each bar and write down my difference between near avg and far avg and whether it is plus or minus. I capture this # diff. by points and hundreds of point. Is this a candidate for DYO? Thanks.

16:54 Ensign Howard: bld, you can use ESPL to print a table of your bar values and study values

16:54 Ensign Howard: Let me post example for you to possibly use, 1 moment

http://www.ensignsoftware.com/espl/espl16.htm

16:56 Ensign Howard: bld, this ESPL example is on topic for what you are interested in doing, having a printed list of bar value and study values. The example would need to be adapted to your specifics, but it is a great starting point for you. The example does a report for lots of symbols, and you would be a simpler case of doing a report for the selected chart and post values for lots of bars, such as the last 100 bars.

16:57 bld: Thank you. I'll start studying this greek right away (lol).

16:57 Ensign Howard: ok, thanks for your time.... I will turn the podium over to Kimball.

17:00 Ensign Kimball: Howard has gone. If you have a specific question for him, please send to ensign2 @ ensignsoftware.com

17:03 badger: I have no problems opening tick and volume charts. But, when I try to open a chart (ab #f) as a range chart, say R200 or R100, I get a chart with just one bar per day. even after a refresh. what am I doing wrong?

17:07 Ensign Kimball: Badger, here is a R10 chart. R100 and R200 are too big for this symbol.

17:13 Shar: Kimball, I'm sorry, but you can run AB/ER2 R160, R320, or higher. I use IB, so with the higher AB range charts you have to let the bars build up daily.

17:22 Ensign Kimball: ok. Thanks. I've got to run. If you have some questions, you can send them to me at Kimballh@ensignsoftware.com Have a nice day

Study Window Size Added to Template

8:13 Ensign Howard: Buffy, one thing I did not get to in class today was a new feature about Templates that are saved with the current version. They will now remember the size of the sub-windows as part of the template definition. This is particularly useful for a template like the WoodieCCI template which likes to have an oversized CCI sub-window

18:14 Ensign Howard: Before the sub-window would always open a default size when the template was applied. Now the template can increase the size so manually increasing the size is unnecessary

18:15 Ensign Howard: Another use of this resize is some users would have very narrow height sub-windows where they showed a sequence of markers. The template will shrink the sub-window size now.

18:16 Ensign Howard: So, get current version, and resave templates with the sub-windows in the desired sizing. Feature is backward compatible, meaning old templates load as before and new templates with the resizing can still be shared with those on older Ensign version as long as no dyos or any other new feature is a part of the template. The sizing is just not acted on by the older Ensigns

18:23 Ensign Howard: ok, thanks for attending class today - bye
