Windows computers, particularly those purchased from the major PC vendors, usually come bloated with programs (sometimes called crapware) that are there more because their developers have paid for placement rather because of any inherent usefulness.
Even worse, there is a feeling among many software vendors (pre-installed software or not) that their software is so important that it ought to be started up when Windows is started, leading to very extended boot-up times and increased sluggishness of Windows.
Most versions of windows come with a utility called MSConfig which allows some configuration of these startup processes. I have found a much more useful and friendly utility called Startup which can be used either as a standalone program or as a control program.
